📜 History of the Michigan Parks on the Air Meetup

Each year, the Michigan Parks on the Air Meetup brings together amateur radio enthusiasts from across the state — and beyond — to share a day of operating, learning, and connecting outdoors. What began as a grassroots idea has grown into an annual tradition fueled by passion, community spirit, and a love of portable radio.

The idea for the meetup was sparked by Mike Case (W8MSC), a passionate POTA activator and advocate for amateur radio. His vision was to create a dedicated annual event in Michigan that would bring together operators of all skill levels — and those curious about the hobby — in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

While the Michigan POTA Meetup was not the first gathering of its kind, the organizers saw an opportunity to build something lasting — a solid foundation for future events not just within Michigan, but as a model that others elsewhere might draw inspiration from. The organizing team shares a deep love for Parks on the Air and amateur radio, and that enthusiasm continues to shape every event we host.

🎉 1st Annual Meetup – 2024

📍 Sleepy Hollow State Park (POTA: US-1540) | June 8, 2024

Our very first Michigan POTA Meetup took place at Sleepy Hollow State Park, chosen for its central location near Lansing and easy accessibility for operators from across the state. It turned out to be the perfect starting point for what would become a growing tradition.

Over 50 attendees participated in the 2024 event, including a few visitors from outside Michigan. The energy was high, with a shared excitement from not knowing exactly what to expect — and that sense of discovery made the day even more special.

Sleepy Hollow’s peaceful forest setting and well-equipped shelter provided a welcoming space for operating and socializing. A standout moment was a live FM satellite demonstration, which drew a large crowd and showed off one of the more dynamic aspects of the hobby. We also welcomed newly licensed hams, who got their first look at POTA operations and the amateur radio community in action.

🔊 2nd Annual Meetup – 2025

📍 Fort Custer State Recreation Area (POTA: US-3310) | June 7, 2025

Building on the momentum of our first event, the second annual Michigan POTA Meetup was held at Fort Custer State Recreation Area — and it turned out to be even bigger! With over 80 attendees and 30+ campers, it was a vibrant celebration of amateur radio in the heart of southwest Michigan.

We saw everything from first-time POTA activations to seasoned operators mentoring new hams. The Whiteford Lake Shelter buzzed with conversations, antennas, hot dogs, shared dishes, and raffle prizes. The camaraderie was incredible, and the atmosphere reflected the spirit of the amateur radio community at its best.

Special thanks to Ham Stuff Online, the Southern Michigan Amateur Radio Society (SMARS), and the South Lyon Area Amateur Radio Club for their support, donations, and volunteerism. This event wouldn’t have happened without the amazing help of those who pitched in behind the scenes.

🚀 Looking Ahead

The Michigan Parks on the Air Meetup continues to grow as a vibrant, community-driven event for amateur radio operators across the region. Each gathering brings new faces, shared knowledge, and memorable on-air experiences in some of Michigan’s most scenic parks.

We can’t wait to see you at the next one — radios ready, antennas up!
